Open water swimming feels different from pool swimming in ways you can’t fully predict until you’re in it. The water is colder than expected. You can’t see anything below your face. Other swimmers crash into you at the start. The buoy you’re aiming for keeps disappearing. The current pulls you sideways. Twenty minutes in, you realize you’re farther from shore than you intended and the wind has picked up.
Open water swimming is genuinely riskier than pool swimming, and the experienced swimmers who do it well have specific practices that pool swimmers don’t. This article covers the major risk categories and the protocols that address each.
Why open water is different
Pool swimming controls almost everything. Open water controls almost nothing.
- Temperature. Pool water is warm (78–84°F). Open water is often 55–70°F. Cold shock and hypothermia are real.
- Visibility. Below the surface, you may see nothing — silt, algae, dark water. The bottom and your buddy are invisible.
- Currents and wind. A 5 mph wind on a lake creates surface chop and pushes you sideways. Rivers and ocean have actual currents.
- Navigation. You can’t follow a black line on the bottom. You navigate by surface landmarks (“sighting”), which requires lifting your head every few strokes.
- Other swimmers. In a triathlon mass start, you’re swimming in a pack — physical contact is constant.
- Wildlife. Mostly harmless, but startling. Fish, algae, plants brushing your legs.
- No walls. You can’t rest at the side. If you need to stop, you tread water or hold a buoy.
Each of these is manageable. None of them are managed by accident.
Hypothermia and cold water
The biggest preventable risk in open water swimming is cold water exposure. Cold water cools the body roughly 25 times faster than cold air. The progression:
- Cold shock (first 1–3 minutes). Gasping, hyperventilation, racing heart. Most cold-water drownings happen in this window — the swimmer can’t catch their breath and panics.
- Cold incapacitation (3–30 minutes). Hands and feet stop working. Stroke degrades. Swimming becomes inefficient.
- Hypothermia (30+ minutes). Core temperature drops. Confusion, slurred speech, eventual unconsciousness.
The exact timeline depends on water temperature, body composition, swim suit, and exertion level. Rough guidelines:

A wetsuit dramatically extends these times. A swimmer in a 3mm wetsuit in 55°F water can sustain a 2-hour swim safely; the same swimmer without a wetsuit might incapacitate in 20 minutes.
Practical cold-water protocol
- Know the water temperature before you swim. Lakes have temperature buoys; many state parks publish water temps online. Carry a small thermometer for the first swim of the season.
- Acclimate before committing. Get in waist-deep, splash water on your face and chest, breathe deliberately for 60 seconds. The cold shock response peaks in the first minute.
- Wear a wetsuit if water is under 70°F. USA Triathlon allows wetsuits for water under 78°F and requires them under 60.5°F. For recreational swimming, use the same thresholds.
- Start short. First open-water swim of the season: 10–15 minutes, close to shore. Build distance over weeks.
- Know the signs of hypothermia in yourself. Slurred thinking, clumsy strokes, can’t feel your hands. Get out immediately.
- Have a warm exit plan. Towel, dry clothes, hot drink, warm car. Cold-shock effects continue after you exit; rewarming is part of the swim.
Sighting
You can’t follow a black line on the bottom of open water. You navigate by occasionally lifting your eyes to find landmarks.
The technique:
- Pick a target. Usually a buoy, a beach, a marker on the shoreline. Pick something tall and distinctive — a tree, a hotel, a flag.
- Lift your eyes (not your head) every 6–10 strokes. Eyes just clear the water for half a second. Don’t lift the whole head — sinks the hips and exhausts you.
- Combine with your breath. Sight just before turning your head to breathe. Eyes forward, then turn for air. One motion.
- Stay relaxed. A tense sighting motion breaks stroke rhythm. Practice in the pool with the lane line as the imaginary target.
In waves and chop, the target sometimes disappears as you sight in a trough. Take an extra sight cycle to confirm direction. Don’t panic if you lose the target briefly.
Beginners over-sight (every 2–3 strokes) which slows the swim and tires them out. Experienced swimmers sight every 10–15 strokes in calm water, every 6 strokes in chop.
Pack behavior in mass starts
Triathlon and open water race starts are chaotic. Hundreds of swimmers all start simultaneously and converge on the first buoy.
What to expect:
- Physical contact. Hands on your back, feet kicking your face, swimmers crashing into your stroke. Not personal.
- Visibility under water is near zero. You can’t see what’s coming from below.
- The first 200–400 yards is the worst. After that, the pack spreads out.
How experienced swimmers handle it:
- Start at the back or wide outside of the pack on your first event. Less contact, marginally more distance, much less stress.
- Stay in your stroke. Don’t try to power through — your normal pace is fastest in the long run.
- Pop your head up if you get disoriented. Stop swimming for a second, look around, regain your bearings.
- Don’t fight back if someone bumps you. Push them away if needed; don’t get into a swim brawl.
- Watch for the wide-spreading swimmers who don’t sight and end up in the wrong place. Don’t follow them.
After the start, the pack spreads out enough that contact becomes occasional rather than constant. By the second buoy, you’re usually swimming with 1–3 swimmers in your immediate vicinity.
Drafting
Drafting in open water — swimming behind another swimmer in their wake — is legal in most events and meaningfully easier than swimming solo. You save 10–20% energy. The technique:
- Position your goggles at the swimmer’s hip or foot. Hip draft (right beside them, just behind) or foot draft (directly behind).
- Match their pace. Don’t surge or fall behind.
- Stay within 1–2 body lengths. Beyond that, you lose the draft.
Drafting works. Most experienced open water swimmers draft when they can. It’s not a violation of fair play in most events — it’s just good strategy.
Currents and tides
In rivers and oceans:
- Know which way the current goes before getting in. Currents at beaches change throughout the day with the tide.
- Swim upstream first. Start your swim against the current, then turn around and let it carry you back. Avoids the situation where you swim downstream feeling great, turn around, and can’t make it back.
- Recognize rip currents. A rip current is a focused outflow of water perpendicular to the beach. If caught in one, swim parallel to shore until you’re out of the current, then back to shore. Don’t fight the current directly.
- Beware tidal changes. A swim that’s pleasant at slack tide can be unswimmable an hour later when the tide is moving.
For most lake swimming, currents aren’t a major factor. For ocean and river swimming, currents are the major factor.
Swimming alone vs. with a buddy
The fundamental open water safety rule: don’t swim alone in open water. This is more important than any other guideline.
Options:
- Swim with a partner. Both swimmers in the water, watching each other, similar paces. Best for confident swimmers.
- Swim with a kayak escort. A friend or coach in a kayak alongside you. Adds rescue capability and visibility.
- Swim at a beach with lifeguards. They’re not specifically watching you, but they’re watching the water.
- Swim in an organized event or supervised practice. Triathlon training groups, masters open water sessions, swim-and-watch buddy systems.
The “I swim alone all the time in this lake and have never had a problem” attitude is the one that produces the cases that go badly. Currents shift, jellyfish appear, cramps happen. The buddy is who finds you when something unexpected happens.
Visibility devices
For solo open water swimming (when you must), or busy water where boats are present, wear something high-visibility:
- Bright swim cap. Most events require neon orange, neon pink, or neon yellow caps. Always wear one in open water.
- Towed swim buoy. A bright orange inflatable buoy you tow behind you on a tether. Makes you visible to boats from a long distance. Adds emergency flotation. Around $40–$80 for a quality one.
In any body of water with motorized boat traffic, the towed buoy is essentially required equipment.
Common open water mistakes
Underestimating cold. Lake water that feels warm at the surface is 10–15°F colder 3 feet down. Plan for colder than you think.
Swimming too far on your first day. Build up. Your first open water swim of the season should be 15 minutes near shore, not your usual 60-minute pool workout.
Not eating before a long swim. Hypothermia is much worse on an empty stomach. Eat a real breakfast before any open water swim over 30 minutes.
Trusting calm water. A calm lake at 8 AM can have whitecaps at 11 AM as wind builds. Check forecasts and don’t swim too far in early conditions if you’re going to be in the water for hours.
Skipping the wetsuit “because it’s just a quick swim.” Many cold-water emergencies happen on swims that were supposed to be brief.
Forgetting to plan the exit. Where do you get out? Is it the same spot? Is your car there? Your dry clothes? Plan the end of the swim before you start.
When to call it
Get out of the water if:
- You can’t feel your hands.
- Your stroke feels significantly worse than at the start.
- You’re confused about direction or distance.
- The weather is changing for the worse.
- You’re alone and equipment has failed (lost buoy, fogged goggles, leg cramp).
- You’re more than your “comfortable distance” from your safe exit point.
“I’ll just do another lap” is the thought that produces the next case study. The water will be there tomorrow.
Building open water fitness
If you want to develop as an open water swimmer:
- Pool training is most of it. 80% of your training is still pool work. Open water just transfers the fitness.
- Add open water swims weekly in season. Once a week if possible, 30–60 minutes each.
- Practice sighting in the pool. Every 6 strokes, lift your eyes to look at the wall. Builds the habit without the open water risk.
- Practice in increasing chop and wind conditions. Calm-water swimming doesn’t prepare you for choppy events.
- Practice with a wetsuit if you’ll race in one. Pool sessions in your wetsuit teach you how it changes your stroke.

The framing
Open water swimming is one of the most enjoyable variants of swimming once you’re competent at it. Lake mornings in summer are unbeatable. Ocean swims in clear water are beautiful. Triathlon swims build community.
The “competent” part requires the protocols. Hypothermia awareness, sighting practice, pack behavior, buddy systems, visibility equipment. None of it is exotic; all of it is the difference between joyful and dangerous.
